The growing ranks of experienced Internet users as well as the deepening reach of the Internet into all aspects of American culture has raised all Americans' expectations about what is available online.
- 46% of Internet users say they will use the Net next time they have a medical inquiry, a figure statistically indistinguishable from the 47% of Internet users who say they will contact a medical professional.
- 47% of Internet users say that if a store provides product information online, even if it doesn't sell goods at its Web site, this would make them more likely to go to the physical store to buy the product.
- 63% of all Americans expect a business will have a website that gives them information about a product they are considering buying;
"The message of this survey is that the Internet is the norm now in America," said Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project. "Most expect to find key information online, most find the information they seek, and many say they turn to the Internet first when they have a pressing need."
According to the researchers, e-retail will grow by 30% in 2003, and by an average annual growth rate of 21% between 2002 and 2007. The outlook is that by 2007, more than 5% of US retail sales will be transacted online. Jupiter forecasts that the number of US residents that access the Internet will grow by 11% during 2003, from 141 million to 156 million. As a result, the online population will represent more than one-half (54%) of the overall population by year-end.
